Welcome to the Yellowstone Journal
There is something special about driving through the gates of Yellowstone before sunrise.
The roads are quiet. The air is cool. The mountains are just beginning to catch the first light of day. Before long, ravens begin to fly overhead, bison emerge from the morning mist, and somewhere in the distance, a wolf may be starting another day.
Every visit feels different.
That is one of the reasons I created the Yellowstone Journal.
I wanted a place to share the stories, wildlife encounters, lessons, and unforgettable moments that make Yellowstone one of the most incredible places on Earth. This won't be a news site or a travel guide filled with generic advice. Instead, it will be a collection of experiences from someone who genuinely loves spending time in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
My journey with Yellowstone began in 2022. Like many first time visitors, I expected beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife. What I didn't expect was how deeply the park would change the way I looked at nature.
During that first trip, I had the incredible opportunity to spend time with legendary wolf researcher Rick McIntyre. Listening to his stories while watching wolves in the wild gave me a completely different appreciation for Yellowstone. I realized that every animal has a story, every landscape has a history, and every day in the park offers something new to learn.
Since then, I've returned to Yellowstone again and again.
Not because I expect to see something rare every time, but because no two days are ever the same. One morning might be spent watching wolves travel across Lamar Valley. Another might be filled with bison grazing peacefully while a curious fox hunts nearby. Some days the most memorable moment is simply sitting in silence, watching the sun rise over the valley while the park slowly comes to life.
Yellowstone has taught me patience.
It has taught me that nature doesn't operate on our schedule. Wildlife doesn't appear because we want it to. The best moments often come after hours of waiting, watching, and appreciating everything else around us.
Through this journal, I hope to share more than photographs. I'll be writing about wildlife behavior, conservation, seasonal changes, travel tips, photography, and the stories behind the animals that make Yellowstone such a remarkable place.
You'll find articles about wolves, bears, bison, ravens, and many of the other species that call this ecosystem home. I'll also share practical advice to help you plan your own Yellowstone adventure, along with personal reflections from my time in the park.
Whether you're planning your very first visit or you've been returning for years like I have, I hope this journal helps you see Yellowstone in a new way.
Thank you for being here and for joining me on this journey.
I look forward to sharing the wild heart of Yellowstone with you.
See you in the park.
Daniel
